The Macquarie Matrons thrive on displaying a healthy disrespect for boundaries and creating a unique and awe-inspiring event that consistently amazes all those that attend. Never a committee to shy away from challenges, they continue to raise the bar and achieve beyond expectations.

The Macquarie Matrons was formed in 1999 by a group of dynamic young women with a vision. Since then, there have been over 50 Macquarie Matrons who have dedicated their time and energy into making a difference to their communities.

Each ball the Macquarie Matrons select a principle charity that holds great relevance for the Macquarie Valley and set about raising both awareness and money for the cause. To date the Macquarie Matrons have raised in excess of $750,000 for charity.

The Macquarie Matrons Charles Sturt University Scholarship

This year the committee has also recognised the need to assist the education paths of the youth in the Valley. Liaising with Charles Sturt University, the committee has established the Macquarie Matrons Scholarship which will offer financial support to one student per year from the Macquarie Valley whilst studying at Charles Sturt University in Dubbo.

The prize is open to students in any course, in any year at CSU Dubbo Campus who can meet the Charles Sturt Foundation selection criteria including that the student must be female and have resided within the Macquarie Valley area (Narromine, Trangie, Warren, Tottenham) for at least 12 months. The student must also be able to demonstrate a sound committment to their town through involvement in community and sporting groups.

The Macquarie Matrons hope their commitment will help make the dream of attending university slightly more of a reality for one local student each year.This year Katelyn Wheeler has been awarded the inaugural Macquarie Matrons Charles Sturt University Dubbo Campus annual prize worth $1500. Katelyn lives and works part-time in Warren and is a third year student currently studying for a Bachelor of Education.

Magic Matrons

The Macquarie Matrons were thrilled to win the highly competitive ‘WOW Award for Outstanding Making Magic - unsung heroes’ at the Women Out West awards held in Dubbo last weekend.

The Making Magic Award is given to a women’s organisation which has achieved extraordinary things for the local community.

The Macquarie Matrons past and present are deserving recipients of this award, raising more than $750,000 for major charities including Angel Flight, RFDS and CANassist during their last six events.

In 2005 the Macquarie Matrons formed the Macquarie Regional Support Fund. As a result of the last three balls more than $65,000 has been distributed to community groups throughout areas of need within Narromine, Trangie, Warren and Tottenham.

“We are so proud to have been recognised for our achievements in raising funds in our local communities,” Macquarie Matrons’ co-president Amber Dimond said.

“The award, in effect, goes to each woman who has been a committee member, past and present, for their efforts.”

Macquarie Matrons’ co-president Skye Rush was also nominated for the Award for Outstanding Community Leadership - inspirational heart for which she was selected as a finalist on the night.

“It is wonderful to be nominated and supported by our community and we would really like to thank Women Out West for providing the platform for the women in our area to be recognised for their contribution,” she said.

The NAB Macquarie Matrons 2011 Gala Ball to be held on September 17 proudly supports Westhaven Dubbo.
